Do cloth, paper or cotton bags really pollute less?
In a study carried out in 2011 by the United Kingdom Environment Agency, it was found that, although bags made with ecological materials are more durable and reusable, they require more resources in their production, which causes a greater environmental impact.
In the case of the cotton bag, its process involves not only the agricultural production of the plant, its manufacturing also entails a certain degree of pollution, coupled with the environmental impact generated by its packaging and transportation, which generally come from countries like China.
According to the study called: Supermarket bag life cycle assessment , the Environmental Agency made comparisons with different types of bags:
Supermarket bag made of high-density polyethylene.
Biodegradable bag made from a mixture of starch and polyester.
Bag to last "a lifetime"made of low density polyethylene .
Bag made of polypropylene non-woven fabric and sold as "eco-friendly."
Cotton bag.
Each of them was compared with variables such as:
Acidification.
Human toxicity.
Aquatic ecotoxicity.
Marine ecotoxicity.
Terrestrial ecotoxicity.
Photochemical oxidation.
During the comparison, the Agency found that the bags that generate the most waste are polyethylene: "those that last a lifetime." Approximately one thousand units generate 5,850 grams of waste.
This is followed by cotton bags, which generate 1,800 grams of waste for every thousand units manufactured.
In contrast, the bags that pollute the least in their production are polyester ones, since they generate 94.8 grams of waste per thousand manufactured; while "classic" high-density polyethylene bags generate 418.4 grams of waste, per thousand units manufactured.
Those bags intended to last longer require more resources in their production and are therefore likely to produce greater environmental impacts when compared bag by bag.
According to the document, the key to avoiding greater contamination and environmental impact due to the use of bags lies in reusing them as many times as possible.
Paper bags have to be reused at least 3 times; low-density polyethylene ones made to “last a lifetime,” at least 4; those made of polypropylene non-woven fabric 11; and cotton ones 131 times.
