Pollution can cause health problems in the short and long term; According to the World Health Organization (WHO) , pollution increases the risk of suffering from acute respiratory diseases, such as pneumonia, and chronic diseases, such as lung cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
The most serious effects occur in people who are already sick. Furthermore, the most vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly and low-income families with limited access to medical care, are more susceptible to the harmful effects of this phenomenon.
In Mexico City since July 1, 2016, the France Mobile Number List Government of Mexico City and Sedema implemented a vehicle verification system that included the measurement of fine particle emissions, the review of the physical-mechanical conditions of the automobiles and on-board diagnostic (OBD) verification, which measures critical pollutants through the car's computer, in order to prevent pollution from further affecting citizens and the planet.
Claudia Sheinbaum, the head of government of Mexico City, said that “exactly what the standard says is being complied with” and that work is being done to improve the verification centers and on different measures to improve air quality.
“We are working with the Ministry of the Environment, Mobility, including Central Supply, different areas of the Government on a program to improve Air Quality, on a comprehensive program to improve the environment in Mexico City. We are working on this, there have been a series of environmental contingencies, today we saw an analysis of how it is associated with temperature, air speed, etc., etc.
(…) in the next semester we are going to carry out a series of measures that will help us improve air quality without them being occurrences, but really in a planning scheme,” explained the head of Government.
It should be noted that citizens who have protested against this measure are protecting themselves under two articles. The first article dictates that every person will enjoy the human rights established in the Constitution and in the international treaties to which Mexico is a party, as well as guarantees of their protection, the exercise of which may not be restricted or suspended. As well as in the fourth article, which establishes the right for every person to enjoy a healthy environment for their development and well-being.
On Twitter, hundreds of people are seeking protection; they have a medical diagnosis and were willing to sign. Among the plaintiffs are sick cyclists, people with chronic illnesses or children affected by the latest environmental contingencies.
In 2019, 109 days with poor air quality
According to data from Animal Político , in the 117 days that have passed this year (ending on April 27), 109 days have presented emissions greater than 100 points in one of the 5 pollutants used as criteria, which indicates a health risk for people with chronic diseases, respiratory diseases, children and the elderly.
According to the Air Monitoring Directorate in Mexico City , the air quality index is established in six classifications: good, where 0 to 50 points are issued; regular, where 50 to 100 points are issued; bad, with a value of 101 to 150 points; very bad, greater than 150 points, extremely bad greater than 200 points, and dangerous above 300 points. Above 101 points, it implies a health risk.
